It’s Dog Days at the Comox Valley Fall Fair

The Shamrock 4H members have been gearing up for the annual Fair at the Exhibition Grounds. In particular, the six members signed up in the dog project have been having fun getting together as a group with their dogs. We have also been busy practicing dog obedience and showmanship. Shamrock 4H members will also be participating in some games as well as a dog costume class.

The working dog excelled at herding livestock, guarding livestock and family, hunting and predator control. Their duties varied from protecting the baby from snakes to moving the bull. There are many breeds of herding dogs as well as many styles of herding. For example, the Border Collie commonly when herding sheep, uses what is called "the eye" to work — a glare which asserts their dominance over the sheep, others are well known for their ability to dart in and nip the heels of livestock – be sure to come to the fair to see a demonstration.

Working dogs love to please their human partners, but can think on their own, using choice and consequences. One owner of a farm Shepherd said that he could tell his dog the name of the cow he needed, and the dog would fetch the specific cow!

Today fewer dogs work on the farm, but they are one of the most popular pets in the world. Dog lovers have no problem telling you why the dog is considered man's best friend – loyalty, unconditional love, companionship and laughs. They also encourage you to be more active, as they beg for a walk holding their leash. Dogs also make excellent service dogs – from being a person’s eyes and ears, to helping them get around in wheelchairs.

4H members will be very happy to answer any questions you have about dogs. Come see us at the “World of Dogs” area at the Fair. 4H members are also involved with many other animals as well as having a crafts display at the Fall Fair on August 26 & 27. Come out and support our excellent organization.

Our thanks to everyone who took the time to enter our contest.

2007 College Scholarship

The Scholarship for 2007 went to Bruce McClintock who entered his last year of Forestry at the University of Alberta this year. He grew up in Comox and was exposed to the agriculture and forest industries early on. Feeding cows, picking up bales were a great character builder.

Bruce was a 4H member and learned about animal husbandry, responsibility and showing calves throughout the island. Bruce also worked with his father, a forestry engineer, and experienced what forestry has to offer. After graduation from high school, Bruce completed a degree in business but felt he needed something more tangible as a career so entered forestry.

Bruce is hoping to return to the Island to work in the forestry industry. He would eventually like to purchase an acreage or small farm.

Bruce was presented with his $1,500.00 scholarship by Vivien of the Sunrise Rotary club and Leah Hryko for Home Depot and the CVEA Fall Fair.

Call out for Performers and Vendors at Fall Fair

The Comox Valley Exhibition Association is looking for entertainers, food vendors, and booth renters for the annual Fall Fair set for August 25 and 26, 2007.

The CVEA board is working hard to pull off the best fair ever, with some spectacular events lined up including thrilling cattle penning, baby oxen, Super Dog Shows, impressive 4-H exhibits, and the famous Kids Zone.

The board is looking for local entertainers interested in performing on the main stage or throughout the grounds. Singers, dancers and acrobats are invited to send a demo tape to the fair office.

Any commercial or non-profit organizations interested in having a food concession or exhibiting their product for sale or information purposes are asked to contact the office for an application form. A booth is an excellent way to display and sell your arts, crafts or to get your message to the people of the Comox Valley.

The pancake breakfast has always been a terrific way to begin a day at the fair. If your non-profit organization members are early risers and good cooks, you're invited to submit an expression of interest to sponsor this event.

For more information contact the CVEA Fall Fair, Box 3492 Courtenay, V9N 6Z8; call 338-8177.   Visit www.cvexhibition.com.

Become involved with the Fall Fair this year!

Now's the time to come forward! The Comox Valley Exhibition Association (CVEA) is already hard at work planning the latest Annual Fall Fair, and new people and ideas are always welcome!

Why not become a CVEA member and attend our general meetings? It's a great way to play an active role in shaping current and future fairs. If you'd like to do more than attend the meetings, expand your involvement by becoming a volunteer. Spend a few hours at the fair taking tickets, or organize and run an entire event - the degree of participation is entirely up to you. If you're interested in the fair but pressed for time, just give us a call with your ideas or suggestions. We welcome input from the public; after all, the Fair is put on for you!

For information on becoming a member and/or volunteering, just give our office a call at 338-8177. Office hours are reduced during the winter (open 2 hours daily Monday - Friday) so please leave a message if necessary and someone will respond as soon as possible. Help us make this year's Fair the best yet!

The CVEA is the non-profit society responsible for hosting the CVEA Fall Fair, the longest-running community event in the Comox Valley. Each year the Fall Fair showcases the diversity of agriculture in the Valley; provides a venue for Comox Valley 4-H clubs to hold their achievement day; provides a public showplace for all the growing sectors: agriculture, silviculture, and aquaculture, as well as for the hobbyist, home gardener and household cook to have their products evaluated against provincial standards; promotes awareness of "Product of the Comox Valley" label; provides affordable family oriented entertainment; and educates the public regarding environmental protection as related to agriculture.
